Speeding driver loses control, flips car into building on Detroit's west side

DETROIT (WJBK) - Police are investigating a deadly rollover crash on Detroit's west side early Friday morning. The driver was rushed to the hospital in critical condition, and the passenger was deceased at the scene.

The accident happened around 4:30 a.m. in the 3900 block of Fenkell Avenue, which is near the John C Lodge Service Drive and Livernois Avenue.

Police say the woman was speeding when she hit a bump in the road, lost control, bounced off the curb and went airborne before crashing into a building at the corner. The car flipped over and landed on its roof.

"I pulled over and was on my phone, and as I was going through my phone I seen the car come flying by," says Larry Howard. "That's what made me look up, because I had my window cracked and I heard it go by. Sounded like a racecar."

The woman had to be cut out of the car, a silver Saab, before she could be taken to the hospital.

Police haven't given the victims names yet, but say they are in their 30s.

Police aren't sure yet if alcohol or drugs played a role in the crash.
