(WJBK) - "I was at home; it was the summertime. I was laying down thinking, just thinking about college actually and then I got the call."
It was a call that set in motion the plans Nicole Herring has been wanting. The Martin Luther King Jr. Senior High School student is going to college! She's going to study to become a nurse.
"I really like kids. I babysit sometimes," she says.
But, she knows determination needs to be paired with opportunity. That's where the Michigan nonprofit College Funding 123 comes in. Their goal is to help kids like nicole achieve those dreams.
The foundation collects donations of $1,500 and turns that into life skills and scholarships.
"Adopt one student a day, so 30 students throughout November," explains Vicki Foley. "For that donation they sponsor a student with a scholarship. It's not just a flat $1,500 scholarship. What happens is they get the entire program of College Funding 123 Foundation, which includes ACT and SAT prep, college coaching and help with federal financial aid."
It's a huge help for students with big dreams.
"It would mean a lot to take a lot out of my mom's pocket," Herring says.
She is just one of potentially 30 students who can have these same opportunities.
