Students hold march for peace at Oakland University

It is a prayer of peace. Students from different backgrounds marched in unity at Oakland University in a stance against ISIS.

The candlelight vigil was also a chance for Muslim students to distance themselves and Islam from ISIS.

"ISIS is in no way an Islamic state," said one Muslim student. "That's maybe what they preach, but in no way to they exemplify my religion."

That sentiment was echoed by more than 100 Oakland University students and faculty members who staged a candlelight peace march on campus.  It was prompted by the beirut bombing and paris attacks carried out by ISIS.

OU French professor Walter Temple says his cousin's son could've been one of their victims.

"He was actually working in the bar when one of the concerts took place and he was able to escape with several people," Temple said. "He was not harmed but it's been very traumatic."

The aim of the event, that included more than 30 student groups,  was to foster unity on campus.

Halim Sheena from the Chaldean-American student organization planned the gathering.

"Their goal is to spread hate and distrust and fear among the people," he said of ISIS. "And we want to show them that even though they're trying, it's not going to work."

After the march  the group held a moment of silence for the ISIS victims from Beirut to Paris, from Syria to Iraq.
