A 7-year-old boy is in the hospital after being shot at his home on Detroit's east side.

Now, one of his mother's acquaintances is in custody for allegedly pulling the trigger.

Not even 24 hours after Detroit police released the photo of a man they believe shot  a boy on the city's east side, that suspected shooter Torrey Craft, turned himself in.

"Here we have - what we like to call an 'urban terrorist' walks up into a neighborhood and just started firing shots," said Sgt. Michael Woody.

Detroit police say Craft turned himself in to the city's 5th Precinct Wednesday afternoon. It was a relief for neighbors on Fairview.

Police believe tension had been building.

"There was some type of domestic dispute that occurred the night before," said Woody. "In which the individual came back to exact his revenge on this family."

Police say Tuesday night Craft, who neighbors say used to live in the complex, showed up with an assault weapon firing seven shots toward his girlfriend, her family, and the boy identified as Amir Johnson shot in the thigh.

"Obviously one is one too many," Woody said. "We are talking about a child here. This is a 7-year-old victim who had nothing to do with this and is undeserving of such treatment."

The mother of Amir tells FOX 2 her son was originally listed in critical condition but is doing better, and is expected to be okay.

That boy's mother also tells FOX 2 she doesn't know Craft and doesn't know why he was shooting. She says her child was simply caught in the crossfire.

Detroit police say they are hearing conflicting stories.

"We've heard many different stories, many different accounts of what happened at this house," Woody said. "There is a lot we need to muddle through. It is a very fluid investigation."

While police and neighbors are grateful that suspected shooter turned himself in, police are, once again, reminded of that innocent child and so many others -- whose lives have been taken.

"We all stand in front of these cameras and talk about how we need to do better by our children," Woody said. "This is unacceptable behavior by this individual."
