Suspected drunk driver causes fiery crash in Madison Heights

A car crashed into a house on Barrington in Madison Heights Monday night. Both the car and the house were suddenly on fire.

Neighbors quickly realized the driver was unconscious.

“I heard this god-awful bang noise, and then an explosion,” said Keith Bible, a neighbor who pulled the driver from the burning car. “I ran back in the house got my knife, cut his seatbelt off and just pulled him out of the car. As soon as we got him out of the car, the whole car was engulfed in flames.”

Witnesses say the man who lives in the house was watching television in the front room at the time of the crash.

“Thank the Lord that that man who was the occupant of this home wasn’t killed or injured,” said George Spencer of Restoration & Victim Assistance.

“By the grace of God I don't know how he made it out of there,” said Bible. “I really don't.”

Madison Heights firefighters were back on the scene Tuesday morning to put out hot spots, while restoration crews secured the house.

Keith Bible has a scrape on his face and a slight burn on his leg, but he’s thankful he was able to help get the driver out of the burning car.

“He literally had 2 or 3 seconds and he was done. I mean, fire was already on him.”

The accident is under investigation. Police believe alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
