Take Back The Night provides resources for sex assault survivors

April is Sexual Assault Awareness month. Take Back the Night is a national imitative with the mission of ending sexual and domestic violence.

The Detroit event was held at the Salvation Army Booth Center on Lawton at MLK on the west side. Its aim is to raise awareness about sexual assault and abuse and highlight the resources available to survivors.

Speakers and counseling table sessions were just some of the activities here.

"We want to provide survivors some type of support and let them know they are not alone," said volunteer Dalioa Valdovinos.

Many community agencies pitched in to make the Detroit event happen, including the Wayne County SAFE Project, First Step, Turning Point SASHA Center, Interim House, and the Wayne County Prosecutor's Victim Assistance program.

"It's special because we have resources here where they can receive free services," said volunteer Lilian Roa. "It is also special because it's a moment where survivors can tell their story and they can expect to be supported and believed by everyone here."

Detroit's Take Back the Night offers a special tent designed to provide comfort for victims of assault who may be in an emotional struggle.

"We believe that healing is possible and the tagline this year is prevention is possible," said volunteer Kalimah Johnson.
