A 16-year-old boy died following a car crash in a hit and run on Detroit's west side Wednesday morning.

Just a few weeks ago the family celebrated Michael Yost, Jr's 16th birthday - now they can't believe they're planning his funeral.

"My baby is gone," said Holli Franklin, Michael's mother.

Yost's stepfather, Marlin Franklin, was driving him to school when a motorist driving a stolen Jeep Liberty out of Madison Heights hit their Malibu at Greenfield and Curtis.

"There was a big collision, boom," said a witness.

"I never thought I would have to bury one of my grandchildren," said Sandra Dickens-Guy, Michael's grandmother.

Police say the driver of the stolen SUV fled the scene.

"You hit this baby and just leave," said Mark Hemphill, Michael's uncle. "I know someone saw it. I know they know who did it."

The family is not a stranger to heartache, they say Michael's biological father was killed by gun violence.

Now Michael's stepfather, Marlin Franklin, is being treated for his injuries from the car accident - while those who knew Michael are holding onto memories.

This fall, Michael was on the soccer team for his school, the Jalen Rose Leadership Academy.

"The flag is at half-mast and we have grief counselors on site that are working with our scholars," said Russell Harris, the school's principal. "The most important thing is that our scholars are supporting each other."

Michael's mother says her son will be missed, but she wants him to be remembered for what he loved

"The basketball court, if anyone knew my son, he loved basketball," Franklin said. "He played basketball and he played soccer."

Investigators say they need your tips to solve this case if anyone saw or knows the driver of the Jeep Liberty contact Detroit police at (313) 596-5300.
