Teen escapes kidnap attempt on way home from school

A Detroit teenager was nearly kidnapped on her way home from school.

"This is her neighborhood this is where she stays, where she is supposed to be safe," said mother Shirnita Melton.

Melton's 14-year-old daughter walks home from the school bus stop at Eight Mile and Schaefer. That walk will likely never be the same for her.

"That's scary because I know what his intentions were," Melton said.

The walk home for her teen isn't a long one, about  three blocks or so, but her mom says she usually doesn't go alone. Her brother who she usually walks with, was at basketball practice.

Even walking alone, mom says her daughter is cautious.

"She called me at 4:05 and let me know she was on her way home," Melton said.

"A guy walked past her which made her leery and he turned around towards her," she said.  "He came up behind her, grabbed her by her arm and said 'I've been watching you, come with me.'"

"She (pulled) away from him, pushed him, and she ran home."

Luckily she did get a good look at him.

"Between 6 foot 2 and 6 foot 4, he had a brown skin complexion," Melton said. "He had a scar under his right eye, he had no front teeth. He was wearing black beanie, black hoodie and some black pants."

It was a distinctive description of a familiar face. Her daughter says she saw him last week.

"The guy approached her and asked her how old she was," Melton said.

She says police took and a report and searched the area.

"We do not know what he is capable of, watch your children," Melton said.

As for the person she says is preying on her daughter ... "Keep your hands and other body parts to yourself," Melton said.
