Tensions rise at Royal Oak middle school over racist incidents in the wake of the election.

Including a video of students chanting "build the wall" in the lunchroom and a noose hanging in a bathroom.

For most of the school day, Royal Oak police were in front of the school Monday, while Superintendent Shawn Lewis-Lakin weighed in on the situation.

The student who hung the noose has been suspended and today the superintendent spoke directly to students. Lakin spent Monday in the middle school talking to students and staff, reassuring them.

"The safety of our students is our number one priority," he said. "Bullying, harassment and intimidation have no place in our schools."

He says the student that put the noose in the bathroom was immediately removed from school and the incident has been turned over to the police for investigation.

"Bullying, harassment and intimidation have no place in our schools," Lakin said. "Student safety is our no. 1 priority

Royal Oak police were at the middle school Monday, and some parents were upset that the media was covering this, suggesting that the incident was blown out of proportion.

FOX 2: "Was the media blowing this out of proportion?"

"Student safety is our number one priority," Lakin said. "Bully, intimidation and harassment has no place at our school."

It is the second incident this month at Royal Oak Middle School. Earlier, some sixth through eighth graders were chanting "Build a wall."  Is there a pattern here?

"We all must be sure that bullying harassment and intimidation have no place in our schools," Lakin said.

As far as the student, who has been not being identified,  the superintendent wanted to reassure the public that they do not tolerate bullying intimidation and harassment."

The student is facing expulsion but will go through the disciplinary process. The identity of the student is not being released by the school. Throughout the day, members of the community feel the school superintendent  acted properly removing the student and turning the case over to police.
