A group of thieves thought they hit the jackpot but they apparently couldn't handle the heavy load and dropped the loot outside the crime scene.

All that's left of a Detroit Dollar General is a smashed store front and the bound that the thieves were trying to steal.

They broke into the Dollar General on Joy Road on Detroit's west side just after 3:00 Monday morning. Police say they drove an SUV into the front of the store to get inside.

Once they rammed the door, they jumped inside the store to steal the store's safe. They got it as far as the street in front of the store before they dropped and ran from the scene.

Witnesses reported seeing three people in the car when they rammed the door in the SUV. Police said they found the abandoned vehicle a few blocks away.
