Volunteers hit the streets patrolling for Angels Night in Detroit

- Hundreds of volunteers, a curfew for minors and beefed-up police patrols are all part of the annual Angels Night effort to cut down on arson the night before Halloween.

Minors have to be off the street from 7 p.m. Monday night until 6 a.m. Tuesday morning as the Angels Night's patrols get underway. Those started Sunday but a lot more activity was seen Monday and, of course, Tuesday with Halloween.

Arsons have been the major focal point and really a stain on the city's reputation, but have gone down from hundreds in its 1980s to about 40 over a span of a couple of days last year.

"In the last two years, we've also kind of gone from the fact that they were trying to just patrol our neighborhoods but also make it a safe place for our children to actually enjoy the holiday," said one volunteer. "This year we are really focusing on [Tuesday] night on all the Halloween events.

"Each (police) precinct has a Trunk or Treat; they are Halloween parties at their rec centers. We have a haunted hayride, there is a haunted park this year. There are a lot of activities for our kids and our volunteers are out patrolling the neighborhoods to make it safe for those kids to actually have those activities."

The Halloween curfew in the city of Detroit is that kids 15 and under have to be off the street or accompanied by a parent or legal guardian from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday morning. For kids 16 to 17 years old, it is from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. Wednesday.

Detroit police encourage people to keep their porch lights on and want kids to use flashlights on the sidewalks, and for motorists to drive slowly and be on the lookout for kids crossing the streets and walking around in residential neighborhoods while they're out during trick-or-treating.
