Traveling today: Warming center locations, weather conditions, and slower traffic areas

With freezing temperatures and icy roads, FOX 2 has some tips for traveling today.

Oak Park Community Center will be transformed into a warming center at 8 a.m. this morning.

Warming centers can be good places to sit in and warm up. There are also options for staying over night.

Hours of Operation
The Warming Center will operate during the following hours on the days that fit the above mentioned conditions:
Monday - Thursday, 8 a.m. and 10 p.m.
Friday - Sunday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
Or, as otherwise posted.

Location
Community Center
City of Oak Park
14300 Oak Park Blvd.
Oak Park, Michigan 48237
(On Oak Park Blvd., west of Coolidge, east of Greenfield, and between 9 and 10 Mile Roads)

Contact
Recreation Department at (248) 691-7555 during Warming Center operations
Department of Public Safety at (248) 691-7520 for non-emergency calls after hours
Or, call 9-1-1 in an emergency

Temperatures will be in the teens and single digits.

This is expected to be comparable to the polar vortex that we saw in January of 2014.

Hypothermia and frost bite are both big concerns for today -- be sure to layer up and cover your head, neck and ears.

High temperatures will be in the lower teens.

Some slower traffic areas to look out for include Metro Parkway west of of Dodge Park, 696 westbound after Gratiot, 696 westbound before I-75 and I-275 northbound before I-94.

We've also got a report that police are blocking the intersection at Long Lake and Orchard Lake roads, and fire services are on scene. There will also be a large closure around Cobo Center today and Saturday for private events.

We'll keep an eye on conditions throughout the day and will update this story.
