Trooper injured in road rage incident on I-94 while on his way to funeral

A Michigan State Police trooper was injured in a motorcycle accident Friday morning while he was on the way to a funeral for a fellow officer.

Trooper Ali Hammoud was on the way to Detroit Police Sgt. Ken Steil's funeral when he was seriously injured in the accident. He's currenly receiving treatment at the hospital.

Michigan State Police Lt. Michael Shaw says a road rage incident on Interstate 94 is to blame for the accident, and that they're currently seeking a driver who did not stop at the scene.

Shaw says a white male driver in a blue GMC pickup drove around another vehicle and "brake-checked" that driver, which caused that driver to sideswipe the motorcycle Hammoud was riding.

That driver stopped at the scene and is helping with the investigation. That driver was not injured in the crash. Shaw says they are looking for the driver of the pickup.

Hammoud is a four-year veteran with Michigan State Police and is assigned to the Special Enforcement Section Motor Unit.

Hammoud was on his way to Sgt. Steil's funeral in St. Clair Shores. Steil was shot in the shoulder while chasing a suspect last week and died unexpectedly last Saturday of a blood clot.

A 21-year-old suspect has been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the sergeant's death.

Steil, who had a wife and two sons, was an officer for 20 years and nicknamed "Shark" for his diving skills. You can hear more from Sgt. Steil's family here
