Troy community raises funds for injured firefighter

A community came together Saturday to help support an injured firefighter from Troy, Mich.

Joel Barthlow was seriously injured while working a crash scene at a race during the Memorial Day weekend Detroit Grand Prix last year on Belle Isle. The firefighter was helping rescue a driver who had crashed when he was struck by another race car.

A benefit help pay for mounting medical bills was held Saturday at Joe Cool's on Big Beaver Road in Troy. It was organized by Troy and Southfield firefighters.

"He has been out of work for the past year," said Southfield Firefighter Jay Charby. "Everyone here is supporting him and his recovery to get back. He's got a good family, he has great friends, and he has fellow firemen that are going to help him out."

Barthlow was at the benefit and said he was very grateful for the tremendous support from everyone who turned out.
