Twin sister left heartbroken after brother is killed by hit-and-run driver

ROSEVILLE, Mich. (WJBK) - It's a bittersweet homecoming for Karen Sweet as she is home to prepare funeral arrangements for her twin brother, Keith Powell, who was killed last Friday in Roseville by a hit-and-run driver.

"This loss is very heavy on me," she says.

Two weeks ago, Karen and her husband left Michigan to relocate to Tennessee.

"He said, 'OK, Karen, I'm going to miss you,' and I said I'm going to miss you, too, Keith," she says. She had no idea that would be the last time she would see her brother alive.

Police say it was around 10:30 p.m. Friday when Keith was walking with a female near Macomb Mall when a vehicle ran into him and left the scene. Police say the woman Powell was walking with also left.

The victim's sister says the pain of losing her twin is too much to bear, but the fact that someone would hit him and leave -- and another person would walk away -- makes this tragedy even harder for the family.

"Whoever it was that was in that car at that time and hit him, what were you doing? Why did you not stop to see what happened? The pain is so hard on us," she says.

Karen says her brother had fallen on hard times and was homeless but was working to get his life back together again. She wants the person who killed her brother to know he was loved very much.

"He was a human being, he was my brother. He was loved," she says.

Based on evidence left at the scene, police say the suspect was driving a red Dodge Journey.

"Turn yourself in. You have to understand; you have to have a little bit of a conscience," Sweet says. She adds that she can't sleep and can't believe no one has come forward.

She says she will not give up until the person who killed her brother is located and turned in to police.

"Keith, I love you. I know you are not hurting anymore, but I will get justice for you," she says.

The funeral will be held Thursday November 2 at St. Faustina Catholic Church. Visitation will be held at 10 a.m. and mass will be held at 10:30 a.m.
