Two men die in Macomb County M-53 crash

A deadly crash claims the life of two Macomb County men last night in Bruce Township.

It was 7 p.m. Thursday night when the traffic on M-53 started to slow down due to a the red light just north of 33 Mile Road in Macomb County - but one minivan never stopped at that light.

The driver of the minivan has been identified as Donald Lawerence  a 79-year-old man from Shelby Township who died at the scene. His passenger, 80-year-old Edwin Kriewall of Armada died at the hospital.

A spokesperson with the Macomb County Sheriff's Department said there were no signs that the minivan attempted to brake before impact.
 
He also says neither men in the van were wearing seatbelts.

Mike Vasich and his daughter were driving the opposite direction and came upon the crash scene.

The other vehicle was a Chevrolet van,  rear-ended and also knocked off the road. The 27-year-old driver was treated at the hospital and released.

"I noticed the backup on M-53 north," Vasich said. "The smoke was still coming out."

They took pictures of an overturned mini-van with shattered glass lying in the road and emergency crews on scene.
