Two men shot in car from hail of bullets on east side

DETROIT - Two men were shot on Detroit's east side, but one of the victims drove to a nearby store to call 911.

"There were like seven bullets or something like that," said Leon, a witness. "And we ducked. It was all we could do."

Bullets were flying Wednesday morning as those walking near Mack and Lenox ran for cover.

"When we came up we looked over there, he was lying there," Leon said. "So I walked across the street and called 911. That's what I did for him."

Detroit police say a possible drug transaction brought two groups of people here. That was when witnesses say the men in two separate cars began arguing.

"They were talking and about five minutes later they started shooting," said witness Edward Eubanks. "Everybody started spreading around, seeing the car go through the alley. A car pulled up and went down Mack to Belle Isle."

Several bullets hit a silver Kia, two bullets hitting a 28-year-old man from Nashville, Tennessee in both legs. Another man,  a 26-year-old Detroiter, was also shot.

Police say he may have tried to drive himself to the hospital, but ended up outside a Rite-Aid parking lot a half a mile away. He called 911 as the shooters escaped.

"One person ran through the alley over there," Eubank said. "One person drove off, somebody hopped in the car."

As those two victims are expected to recover, police say those shooters are still on the loose.

"It's an everyday battle," said Lt. Mark Thornton. "It is something we're always struggling with and we're reaching out to the community as well."

Now, police hope someone will decide to do what's right.
