VanCallis' brother says James asked him to delete all his texts

The younger brother of James VanCallis took the stand Tuesday.

Donald VanCallis is the younger brother of 34-year-old James, on trial for murdering, kidnapping and trying to rape 14-year-old April Millsap of Armada.

Attorney "Do you remember him asking you to delete all texts?"

Donald: "Yes."

Attorney: "And what did you say?"

"I think I said absolutely not," he said.

Donald said he talked with his brother several times throughout the day April's body was found along the Macomb Orchard Trail in July of 2014.

Donald VanCallis says he can't remember much about what his brother was wearing or phone conversations that night.

Attorney: "You don't even remember what you talked about?"

"I don't even remember talking to him," Donald said.

While police believe April was murdered around 6:30 that night, Donald VanCallis says he can't remember when his brother arrived to his Armada home to hang out.

Also, he admitted to lying to police when they asked to see his phone.

Attorney: "Do you remember what it was you told them about your phone?"

"Something along the effects that I lost it," said Donald VanCallis. "And that I don't have it."

The defense brought up the fact they were smoking marijuana that night as a reason not to remember details.

Donald VanCallis says he does remember  his brother acting normally.

Attorney: "What's the first thing he said?"

"He threw his hand up, 'What's up guys?'"

Police believe April was stomped to death. Donald VanCallis says he couldn't remember the shoes his brother was wearing that day.

As the defense argues, no physical evidence was found on his motorcycle or his clothing.

Attorney: "Do you remember seeing any blood on him anywhere, from head to toe?

"No, not at all," said Donald VanCallis.

"Did you see any blood on his tee shirt or his motorcycle?"

"No," Donald said.

The trial will continue Wednesday morning.
