VanCallis' online searches analyzed in murder trial

Computer searches dominated testimony Friday in the murder trial of James VanCallis, charged with the Armada teen April Millsap’s death in July, 2014.

An expert who searched the suspect's computer  revealed searches by him like "How to attract younger women" and "Do young girls like older men."

Those were just two of roughly 40 web searches Macomb County prosecutors say weren’t made by VanCallis, 34. He is on trial for the  kidnapping, murder and attempted rape of Millsap, 14, of Armada.

"What does it mean when a girl tells you she has a boyfriend," was another search read aloud by the prosecutor. "The last date was March 17, 2014 at 11:26 a.m."

A computer expert testified Friday that searches including "How to have sex with a girl" and "How to get the girl" were made.

And just days before April's body was found in a ditch along the Macomb Orchard Trail, the search "How to make a girl that does not want you to want you."

Prosecutors also displayed a map of cell towers showing VanCallis' cell phone near the scene along with screen shots of his motorcycle and his Nike shoes.  The shoes police say are very similar to the tread marks left on April's neck after she was stomped to death in July 2014.

Attorney: "Did you find any connection at all between April Millsap's phone and her cell phone to tie her  in any way or any connection to Mr. James VanCallis' phone or cell phone?"

The computer expert testified: "No."

The defense argued that the phone and computer analysis is not an exact science and although it was VanCallis' computer: "The search was done 'how to get the girl.'"

The defense also added that nothing searched was illegal.

"There were no searches on there how to kidnap anybody, were there," said the defense attorney.

"Not that I saw, no." the computer analyst said.

"Were there any searches on there how to rape anybody?"

"No, not that I saw."

"How to murder anybody, how to murder somebody and get away with it?"

"No, nothing like that."
