Vigil held for teen who had open heart surgery after stabbing

A 16-year-old boy is recovering this week from open heart surgery after he was stabbed int he chest in a Roseville park.

The gazebo at Veterans Memorial Park was a crime scene on Monday but became a rallying point for peace by Tuesday.

Zachary Martin was rushed to the hospital after he was stabbed at the gazebo in the upper chest. Witnesses said Martin and the suspect were arguing when the suspect pulled out a knife and stabbed him.

Roseville police say Martin knew the name of the person who stabbed him, and was able to tell officers before he was taken to the hospital. Police tracked down the 15-year-old and arrested him about 30 minutes after the stabbing.

On Tuesday, family friends and classmates gathered to hold a candlelight vigil and hope for peace.

"Let's just hold our candles up and take a moment to pray for Zach and pray for the end of violence," family friend Alexis Hamilton said.

Most of the people attending the vigil know Martin from school and weren't even there when the stabbing took place.

"I started seeing pray for Zach, pray for Zach so I messaged his girlfriend and I found out what happened," Macayla Williams said.

Police said Martin was in a fight with the other teenager over rumors being spread about his girlfriend.

For the young people in attendance Tuesday, they're in shock over what's happened to both teenagers.

"We have a kid fighting for his life and another who faces attempted murder charges," Hamilton said.

The 15-year-old has not been arraigned as prosecutors work to determine if he will be charged as an adult.

On Tuesday, the message is peace and recovery.

"We're all upset. We are upset that kids chose to solve their problems a different way. Violence is never the answer," Hamilton said. "Everybody wants to go see him and obviously he is in critical but stable condition. And he can't have visitors so this is us showing him we are here for you and we are prying."

FOX 2 learned the Martin family was at the hospital with Zach and were watching the vigil via Facebook and they were touched by the show of support.
