Washtenaw County K9s get bullet and stab proof vests

The next time Fred and Argo go out on a call, they'll be wearing a vest similar to other officers. The only difference is that it's cut exactly to fit the four-legged officers.

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office announced Thursday that K9s Fred and Argo both received a bullet and stab proof vest thanks to an anonymous donor.

The organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. delvered the body armor on Wednesday. Each one is valued between $1,795 - $2,234. They weigh 4-5 lbs each and have a five-year warranty to protect the animals.

Argo is a 2-year-old Belgian Malinois-German Shepherd mix. Fred is also two and is a Belgian Malinois, born and bred in Belgium and imported into the United States.

Both dogs are highly energetic and generally sociable and are trained to serve as a "multi-purpose" police service dog. What does that mean? They're trained to detect narcotics and a general patrol dog to include tracking, searching for people or objects, and criminal apprehension.
