Wednesday weather timeline: snow, ice, then rain expected in Metro Detroit

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (FOX 2) - Anyone around here wishing for more winter weather? No? Oh, well then this is awkward...Wednesday marks another round of snow, sleet, freezing rain and regular rain.  

A system way down in the south will travel north over the next 24 hours, bringing moisture up with it. This moisture will collide with cold air in Missouri, changing it over into snow by the time it arrives in Michigan on Wednesday.

The timeline is this: snow will begin to fall mid morning Wednesday. Overall we are not expecting a lot of snow, only about an inch for most locations. 

The snow will last a few hours before transitioning to sleet and/or freezing rain. The freezing rain/sleet threat will continue before switching to plain 'ol rain later in the afternoon. Ice accumulations should be nearly a tenth of an inch - enough to coat the roadways and trees.

After that, rain will take us through the evening hours as temperatures climb to about 36 degrees. It'll rain for most of the evening before slowly tapering off around 11 p.m. 

Commutes to and from work may be impacted depending on when you leave. It will be smart to plan extra time getting to where you need to go.

All of southeast Michigan is under a Winter Weather Advisory Wednesday until later this evening.
