Westland man disappears, sister attempts to track via phone

(WJBK) - It's been more than a month since a Westland man disappeared the night his car is involved in a crash on the freeway and his family needs answers.

"My brother's my best friend. He wouldn't go this long without talking with me," said Daija.

Growing up, everything Daija's big brother Terrance Hayes did she wanted to do. It was more than nerve wrecking when he went missing February 18 in such a bizarre way.

"Nerve wrecking is not the word. I feel so many emotions at one time," she said.

Some of that is still a mystery. The crash report shows at 11 p.m. that night someone driving a car registered to the 28-year-old rear ended another car on the highway.

It shows both cars had to be towed away and the driver of Hayes car ran. Michigan State Police say Hayes cell phone was in the car and witnesses couldn't ID who was driving Hayes car.

"At this point we don't even know where those witnesses are because if they saw him run they would be able to give us some type of information and we don't have that," Daija said.

Daija pinged Hayes phone, which showed that he left his cousin's house in Royal Oak around 10:40-10:45 p.m. An address near the crash popped up an hour later. By midnight, it showed that the phone was in a Hamtramck lot, where the car was towed.

Michigan State Police searched a nearby pond and the Rouge River in late February. His friends and family mounted their own search near the crash site after he went missing. The possibilities for the family are confounding.

His sister says he doesn't have any enemies and that she suspects foul play, but just doesn't know who.
