The Westland Department of Public Safety held its third annual Stuff a SWAT Truck Sunday evening, collecting toys for kids in need.

"I do this every year, I think it's awesome that they collect toys for the tots, got to fill the truck up, I think it's a great community event," Westland resident Judy Munro said.

With the Christmas holiday right around the corner, the Westland Police Department is working to make the holiday special for everyone.

"We're doing our best to make sure those who may be less fortunate this holiday season have Christmas presents to unwrap on Christmas morning," Sgt. Robert Wilkie said.

Santa also made his debut, providing free photos for anyone that donated a new unwrapped toy.

Westland police say they are hoping this year is the biggest one yet, they had 17 completed carts last year so hoping for an even bigger turnout.

"The Westland Goodfellows I know are having a tougher year, they had been depending on Toys R Us for a lot of donations and they haven't come through for them this year," Sgt Wilkie said.

Many families who attended the event took the time to teach their children how to give back during the holiday season.

"We want to teach her to donate to kids that she's extra special and has everything she needs so we want to make sure everybody else has something," Megan Danneels said.

If you are looking to donate this year, charities aren't just looking for toys for smaller children but gifts for teenage kids as well.
