Will Michigan get recreational pot on the next ballot?

Will Marijuana advocates get pot on the next big ballot -- or will their efforts go up in smoke?

There is a nationwide movement to legalize recreational cannabis, leaving many to question if it could come to Michigan.

Medical Marijuana is legal in Michigan, but some say the state is falling behind the curve in America's chronic campaign as more states make casual use legit.

"This is a multi-billion dollar market worldwide that is on the cusp right now," said Thomas Lavigne, Cannabis Counsel.

Meet Thomas Lavigne, a weed warrior hoping to make recreational Marijuana use legal in Michigan. He fought in court to get the issue on Tuesday's ballot and says the battle is far from over - and a victory could payoff.

FOX 2: "How much money do you anticipate this could bring to the state?"

"This could be hundreds of millions of dollars when you add up all the employment as well as the tax revenue as well as the business revenues," he said.

Several states legalized Marijuana Tuesday with California, Massachusetts and Nevada green-lighting recreational use. Lavigne says Michigan voters should get on board and put a dent in a modern civil rights issue white doing it.

"The mass incarceration of our youth and saddling them with felonies, it doesn't help for getting jobs and getting student loans," he said.

At Area 51, a medical marijuana dispensary in Detroit, owner Neal Anton is leary of voters rubber stamping recreational reefers, saying it could kill small time "potrepreneurs."

"My personal preference is no," said Anton, Area 51.  "But if it goes that route it's still better then having people going to houses, they don't even know where to go they don't know who they are talking to. It's safer tocome into a facility and come get your meds than go to a random guy off the street."

Some law enforcement fear legalizing casual use of marijuana could make things more dangerous on the road with drivers under the influence. This issue could end up on the 2018 ballot.
