The Detroit Red Wings are planning a running race with the finish line at center ice in Joe Louis Arena.

The Sept. 10 "Hockeytown 5K Run/Walk" is part of events to mark the team's final season at the arena. The course includes the Detroit RiverWalk. Registration for the race starts at $50, with a portion of the proceeds to benefit the Detroit Red Wings Foundation.

The team says current and former Red Wings will be along the course and inside the arena to help cheer on participants. Following the race, the Red Wings will host the "5K Festival" inside Joe Louis Arena that includes a chance for fans to tour the locker room.

The race is Saturday, September 10. You can register and get more information online here.

The Red Wings are moving to a new arena that's being built in Detroit.

In April, the name of the new arena was announced to be Little Caesars Arena, a nod to the pizza chain founded by Mike and Marian Ilitch who are the current owners of the Red Wings.  The first restaurant was opened in Garden City, Mich. more than 50 years ago. Their brand is now internationally known.

The new home of the Red Wings is expected to open in the fall of 2017. The venue will also host concerts and other events, including Wings' practice. The 20,000-seat arena will also include "gondola seating" suspended over the event level, a public plaza with a big video wall and ice for practice and amateur hockey.
