Woman carjacked with child in car on east side

Detroit police are looking for a man responsible for a shooting, carjacking and near-kidnapping on the east side of Detroit.

On Sunday neighbors say they heard a shot, which police say happened at about 9:30 p.m. A 22-year-old man was wounded in the behind after parking with his 26-year-old girlfriend near the intersection of Yorkshire and Cornwall. Their baby girl was in the back seat.

After the shooting, the suspect got behind the wheel of the couple's silver 2006 Pontiac Grand Prix. The baby was still in the back seat. The woman cried out to the suspect - who let her grab the child before he took off.

Police say the suspect is a dark completed black male, about 5 feet, 8 inches and 150 pounds, last seen wearing a black North Face jacket and black pants. Tipsters can call Detroit police at (313) 596-5200 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.

"The police were all over the street, looking for bullet casings they were all over the street," said Shante Davis.

Police say the couple was here checking out a house that they are preparing to buy, they had just stepped outside of their car when they say the suspect appeared to come out of nowhere.

One man stepped in to help

"She was crying. She was nervous. You could just tell something was wrong," said Rico, a witness. "I saw her with the baby. My heart went out. I thought it could be a set up, it could be something not right. But I took a chance."

The man who was shot is expected to be okay. Now the neighborhood is on high alert knowing the suspect is still out there.
