Woman injured stopping drunk driver in Rochester Hills

A woman was seriously injured after attempting to stop a drunk driver in he parking lot of the Moose Lodge in Rochester Hills from making a huge mistake.

The incident happened at the corner of Livernois and South Boulevard around 7 p.m. Sunday when a 71-year-old woman followed a friend out to the parking lot and allegedly tried to stop that 66-year-old man from Troy from making a terrible mistake.

"He was obviously intoxicated. He was leaving the establishment," said Oakland County Sheriff Sgt. Bryan Wood.

Wood says that woman pleaded with the driver, now behind the wheel with the door still open. She was telling him that she would be his designated driver. But Wood says the driver wasn't listening.

"He put his car in reverse and struck her with the door. The  open door and knocked her to the ground and caused severe injuries to her leg," he said.

This happened as others at the Moose Lodge looked on, helping call 911.

FOX 2 attempted to see if anyone from the Moose Lodge could shed some light on what happened Sunday evening but they said no comment. Paramedics took the woman to the Troy Beaumont Hospital where she is listed in stable condition, expected to recover.

The driver was there as soon as law enforcement arrived.

"He stayed at the scene until the fire department and paramedics and representatives from the sheriff's office showed up," Wood said.

The driver was taken to jail and now faces a number of charges related to driving drunk. The investigation continues into whether or not the establishment will be held responsible for possibly over-serving the 66 year old as well.
