Woman killed, daughter injured in crash at dangerous Pontiac intersection

PONTIAC, Mich. (WJBK) - A woman is dead and her daughter seriously hurt after being hit by a car in a busy intersection in Pontiac.

Family members believe the tragedy could have been prevented killing 67-year-old Connie Morgan's life. It happened at Telegraph and Voorheis in Pontiac about an hour after sunset two weeks ago.

Morgan and her daughter 47-year-old Bonni Kalchert were crossing Telegraph when a driver traveling northbound changed lanes to go into the left turn lane south of Voorheis and struck them. 

Connie Morgan got the worst of it.

"My grandma, they just weren't able to do anything for her," said Jesse Kalchert. "She suffered severe brain damage, she was paralyzed, her neck was broken, her legs were broken. They tried to perform whatever they could."

But Kalchert says it just wasn't enough.  Connie Morgan died Friday morning.

"She would take anyone in and help anybody out," said Michael Kalchert.

"My grandma never had much money and she was disabled," said Jesse. "She would always make sure every holiday no matter what; I would get a handmade card from her."

Jesse's mother Bonni is still in the hospital and the intersection where their family suffered a devastating blow, is as dangerous as ever.

"I feel like there should be some kind of, I don't know, another light with a cross walk, further up the road," he said. "Something where people can cross there safely. There have been so many injuries and deaths from that area in particular."
