Woman killed in 3-car crash on I-96

DETROIT (WJBK) - A section of a major freeway in metro Detroit was closed down Tuesday morning following a deadly crash.

Police closed the eastbound lanes of Interstate 96 at Livernois as they investigated what caused a 3-car crash early in the morning. One woman died.

Police say the crash happened around 3:30 a.m. when one car rear-ended another. A woman driving a third car tried to avoid the accident, and went up into the embankment and lost control. Police say she wasn't wearing a seatbelt and was thrown from the vehicle. She has died from her injuries.

"It was horrible. Just imagining, who could've been in the car or what the circumstances may have been," says Brent Mayberry, a taxi driver who saw the crash happen. "I'm always the type of person who helps others when I see them in distress, but at this point, all I could do was call 911, which is what I did."

The driver of the car that was rear ended suffered non life-threatening injuries.

The driver that rear ended the first car left the scene, but was located by authorities around 7 a.m. at a nearby hospital. That driver's injuries are not known at this time.

Police have not yet named the woman who died as they are notifying her family.
