Woman killed in hit-and-run crash on Detroit's west side

DETROIT (WJBK) - Detroit police are investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that killed a woman Friday night on Detroit's west side.

Police say a newer model Dodge Challenger was speeding down Indiana Street near Curtis when they crashed into a white Nissan Altima at a very high rate of speed.

The driver of the Challenger fled the scene on foot, leaving an injured passenger behind. The passenger, according to police was taken to the hospital with a broken arm and was being uncooperative with investigators.

The victim, a 49-year-old woman, died at the scene and has not been identified.

Witnesses say the crash was so violent that the cars ended up resting on the lawn of a nearby home, police say the Challenger was possibly going as fast as 70 mph before crashing into the Altima.

The victim's car was slammed into a house, where no one was home at the time of the incident. The house belonged to Natalie Flennoy, who rushed home from work when she heard what had happened.

"I approached and saw that my whole home was caution taped off and I couldn't get to it," she recalled. "So, it's just a lot to process."

Flennoy's yard was filled with balloons and stuffed toys to mark the spot where the victim died.

"She's lost her life, now I have to repair my property," she said. "It's senseless."

Police said the driver ran away from the scene and is still missing. The passenger went to the hospital with a broken arm, and according to police, he is not cooperating.

"I just don't understand people who continue to just disobey the law because fatalities happen and this is where we're at," Flennoy said.

Flennoy said normally, the 25 mph speed limit in the neighborhood is followed.

"One stupid mistake causes all of this," she said.

Police are working to get a description of the driver that fled the scene.
