The people of Dearborn Heights are rallying in support of a woman who lost everything in a devastating fire.

Thankfully Jill Wilson and her pets all made it out safely from her Lehigh house blaze, but she's left to pick up the pieces without any homeowner’s insurance.

In 2005 Jill's neighbors had their house catch fire. She put them up in her home but now she never imagined she'd be in the same situation herself.

"I can't believe it, I do so many nice things for people why?" she said. "I've been here since 1998 and to have this happen. It is devastating."

Looking at the melted back of her house, Jill Wilson feels like she is stuck in a surreal moment.

The fire burned so hot in the back of the house, her gate curled into a morphed mess. The back metal door was charred. The wheel barrel burned to a crisp.

But she has her life.

FOX 2: "Your mom said if you had been upstairs, it is possible you would not have made it.”

"I just happened to fall asleep on the couch last night," Wilson said. "Normally I sleep upstairs in my bedroom and I am hearing impaired so I never would have heard the cracking."

She's alive but looking at a home she he can't live in without serious restoration.

And Thursday, the day of the fire, was the day she planned to call her insurance company to reinstate her lapsed homeowner’s insurance.

"I don't know what to do," she said. "It's not like it's one room. It is everything in my house."

Jill's friends say she's the type of woman who adopts injured dogs, like her Logan who needed serious surgery when she got him.

"My children grew up with Jill," said neighbor Ingrid Smith. "And Jill is the type of person who helps everybody. She has a heart of gold."

"She does so much, I don't know why the good Lord let this happen."

The fire department says the back portion of the house as well as the deck is totally gone. They say it appears the fire did not get to the underside of the house was damaged but they believe it started in the back.
