Woman rescues lost toddler from wandering into street

A toddler was rescued in Detroit when a woman spotted him wandering a neighborhood early Tuesday morning.

Diane Hutcherson grabbed the little boy just as he was about to walk right into the street.

He was back in the arms of his mother inside Detroit's third precinct Wednesday.

"I was driving down the street and I saw little baby with a pull-up chasing a dog," Hutcherson said.

Hutcherson says she stopped by a McDonald's on West Grand Boulevard just after 8 a.m. Wednesday, noticing the 2 1/2-year old by himself. Hutcherson did not see an adult nearby and circled the block and parked her car.

"The dog was about to go into the street and the baby was trying to chase him," she said.

Once in the car, Hutcherson says she could tell the boy was well taken care of and gave him some orange juice. The boy, politely said "thank you."

"He's a doll, both were as cute as can be," Hutcherson said.

But after bringing him to the police station, the search was on to figure out where he came from.

The boy could talk but Hutcherson could not understand what his name was.

Detroit police say when Hutcherson showed up, they immediately began canvassing neighborhoods. Officers banged on doors and showed his picture. Eventually they found the right house.

Police say the boy’s 13-year-old brother was supposed to be watching him while their mother was at work, but fell asleep. His mother and father picked him up a few hours later.

"You can never be too careful," said Hutcherson.

Police say although it appears to be an unfortunate incident, officers may proceed with a welfare check. As Hutcherson says, the boy's parents and brother were very thankful she was there.
