Woman walking after running out of gas hit by two cars, killed

The family of Farai Gonzalez is in shock. The woman who was born with spina bifada and beat the odds was ready for a move to River Rouge from Detroit. Instead, she was killed the night before Thanksgiving.

Gonzalez was in Macomb Township near North Avenue and 21 Mile when she ran out of gas. A sheriff's deputy helped get her to a nearby gas station but for an unknown reason, she left the car and started walking.

Minutes later, she was hit by a car. As she lay in the roadway, she was run over by a second car. CPR was performed on Gonzalez at the scene and she was taken to a local hospital where she died.

Both drivers are cooperating with investigators and police say charges are unlikely.

Family members say they can't believe she's gone. They tell FOX 2 she was just about to relocate from Detroit to River Rouge for a fresh start.

"She got keys was really happy wanted to move rest of things on Thanksgiving," her sister, Francheska Gonzalez, said.

Farai was born with spina bifada and the deck was always stacked against her.

"There were a lot of odds against her. Thought she would never walk but she walked, ran and jumped," Gonzalez said. "It took everyone in shock that something like that could happen so sudden when we just spent the day before with her."

Family members say they are holding onto memories but life will never be the same, especially for her daughter who will turn 14 later this month.

"Daisa loved her mother more than anything. More like sisters. She's gonna miss her a lot," Gonzalez said.

As the family tries to move forward, they say they realize things will be difficult so they established a GoFundMe account to help take care of Gonzalez's daughter and pay for the funeral.

"I want people to remember her as a woman who was loved by many," Gonzalez said and knows that her life will never be the same. She hopes this will become a lesson for people everywhere to look at life differently: "Show your love for the person you love all the time. (I) just can't believe (someone) could leave so fast like that. Someone so important to you."
