World Heritage Air Museum's new headquarters

The World Heritage Air Museum is opening its new headquarters Friday at Oakland County International Airport.

The headquarters and flight operations base are now in a renovated hanger at the airport. The hanger is also home to several rare, vintage jets from around the world.

Visitors can get up close to the jets and learn more about them at the new museum.

The World Heritage Air Museum works to rescue military jet aircraft from the 50s, 60s, and 70s, return them to flight status and share them with the world. Its current collection includes jets from Britain, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, Spain, France, Russia and Poland.

WHAM was founded in 2011 at Detroit City Airport. That space will continue to serve as the maintenance and restoration location, while the Oakland County facility in Waterford will be the flight operation base and group tour location.

The hangar is off Airport Road in Pontiac. The Oakland County International Airport is also holding an open house and air show on Sunday, August 23 from 8-4 p.m.
