Wrong way I-75 driver killed in crash was mother of 2

DETROIT (WJBK) - A wrong-way driver dies in an early morning I-75 crash on Detroit's east side.

 Marilyn Clore was stunned to find out the woman killed in a head-on collision on I-75 near Mack in Detroit was her next door neighbor.

Family members identified her as Teresa Hill, a young mother who lived on Marseilles north of 22 Mile in Macomb.

"They've been here probably 25 years, or more," Clore said. "I saw her grow up."

Michigan State Police say the woman was driving a Silver Saturn the wrong way on southbound I-75 around 4 a.m. Friday morning when she collided with another female driver in a silver Chrysler Pacifica.

Emergency workers had to extricate her out of the Pacifica - and amazingly she suffered from non-life threatening injuries.

Police say the car going the wrong way didn't have headlights on. Blood tests will determine if the driver was under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Clore spoke about the victim's 2 young sons who will now have to grow up without a mother.

"It's just, oh my gosh, the two little boys are so nice," said Clore. "It's so sad though. You never know what's going to happen and why."

investigators trying to determine how the woman was able to get on the freeway... unaware she was going the wrong way....

Surprisingly it's more common than you might think.

"We're averaging about 20 reports of wrong way drivers every month here in the metro Detroit area," said Lt. Michael Shaw, Michigan State Police. "We know it is an issue for us, here. We did do some work with MDOT as far as looking at intersections and looking at exits, if they need to be marked more. And also allowing us to use our electronic signs on the freeway to alert people of a wrong way driver that may be approaching."
