Young kids found locked in SUV outside MGM; mother arrested

A Detroit woman is under arrest after two young children were found alone, locked inside a vehicle in the MGM Grand Casino's parking structure.

The children, a 2-year old and a 3-month-old, were discovered shortly after midnight Sunday by someone walking by. Investigators say the 2015 Chevy Equinox was locked and they noticed the kids partially concealed by a blanket. The passerby called police.

Officers were waiting for someone to return to the vehicle, and say they arrested the 27-year-old mother.

"This should have never happened, and it should also be a message to other parents - if you've got a problem with gambling, then, you know what, there's ways to deal with that. But you don't bring infants and toddlers to the gambling location and lock them in a car," says Detroit Police Chief James Craig. "Many terrible things could've happened to these children. They could've gotten kidnapped, just, endless. And why? For what?"

Investigators aren't sure how long the kids were left inside the vehicle. Police say they're doing fine, and their father came to the scene to pick them up.

Charges are pending.
