Loose chunk of concrete flies through air, smashes windshield on I-94

A family from Casco is counting their blessings after a scary encounter along a metro Detroit interstate Monday.

A car driving along eastbound I-94 near 10 Mile Road drove over a patch of loose concrete, which kicked up, flew through the air and smashed through another person's windshield.

That person is Mary Jo Walentovic, who was driving with her daughter at the time. She says the chunk was only about four inches from her daughter's face when it came crashing through their windshield.

"It happened so fast. I thought it was a chunk of ice, and a semi was on my right so I couldn't have swerved," she says.

She was able to safely slow down and pull over. She says nobody was hurt, despite the glass shards landing all the way in the back of the van. She says even her rearview mirror is now lying in the back of her car.

"I am so thankful that we're both okay. This could've been a deadly accident, easily," she says.

She says she contacted police about the accident, and plans to also contact MDOT to report the condition of the roadway.
