18-year-old dead after shooting at Eastland Center Saturday

- Harper Woods police are investigating, after a shooting at Eastland Center Saturday left one dead.

It started just before 6 p.m. Saturday outside of the Burlington Coat Factory store in Eastland Center on Vernier Road, near 8 Mile Road.

Harper Woods Police responded to reports of shots fired and upon their arrival located a male victim with multiple gunshot wounds on the sidewalk near Burlington Coat Factory.

The victim has been identified as 18-year-old Tyrell Gibson of Eastpointe. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead. Gibson had a 6-month-old daughter.

Witnesses say it appears a group of people were fighting inside the mall before the shooting. However, police say they are not sure if an altercation lead up to the shooting, or it was a random act.

One suspect was taken into custody related to the incident, but after being questioned by police, that person was released pending investigation.

The mall was briefly on lockdown following the incident.
