Married for 70 years, couple renews vows on Valentines Day

It all began with a chance meeting for Doug and Doris Nowling.

"He used to come down to the grocery store and buy apples at the right time," says Doris.

As for who fell for who, things can get fuzzy after 70 years.

But both Doug and Doris both knew right away that they were meant for one another.

The date for the wedding was set, all the way back in 1945.

Now looking back, both are able to share memories with other couples celebrating a milestone at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Ypsilanti on Valentines Day.

When asked to give advice for those aspiring for a long relationship such as the theirs, both of them had one simple message,  you have to have a sense of humor.

"Work hard, love one another, don't yell, take care of your kids," says Doris.

Doug says, "it's hard to say where the years went, (you) just piece it together and go along."
