Metro Detroit Islamic leaders condemn Paris killings

Local Islamic leaders are speaking out and condemning the killings in Paris

They are also honoring the victims and showing solidarity with the people of France.

The Friday sermon at the Islamic House of Wisdom in Dearborn Heights by Imam Mohammed Elahi was emotional.

"They are worse than animals," he said. "Because they are not showing peace, they are not showing rationality, and they are not showing respect for human rights.

"There is no moral, rational and religious justification for what they did in Paris."

It's a call for peace - after three days of terror in Paris. Wednesday's massacre at a French satirical magazine Charlie Hebdo killed 12 people. The radical Islamist brothers responsible have been taken out. - but four hostages killed.

"Islam should not be blamed, for the action of those people who act like enemies of Islam," Elahi said afterward.

Those at the Islamic center joined in prayer Friday and showed solidarity for the lives lost.

Elahi and those attending Friday say the actions of those brothers do not represent the Islamic faith. They called them cowardly and barbaric, saying they are hijacking their religion.

"It's not faith that makes you a better or bad person," said Suad Turfah. "It's you as an individual."

"I don't like to see anyone killed," said Kathleen Kalil. "I am completely non-violent. Muslims are non-violent."

They say the violent actions in Paris are only fueling the fire of Islamophobia in the community and across the country.

"I come to the mosque every Friday and in my mind I see there are some crazy people who look at me as someone who deserves to die."

Elahi says Islamophobia is like a disease. He said he hopes to demonstrate anti-terrorism and peace daily - also to educate neighbors to do the same.

"Those who fight terrorism and those who work hard to put an end to this chaos and this bloodshed, barbarism and brutality," he said. "They are closer to God."
