Moving man accused of stealing truckload of belongings

A Detroit woman says a moving company she hired to move her belongings to Georgia, stole them instead.

"He got my stuff, my money. I got stuff from when my nephew and my father died, they're sentimental, pictures, notes from my kids, he took everything," said Brittany.

Brittany doesn't want to be identified, so her face is blurred. She was packing up and moving the family to Georgia. She rented a budget moving truck that she loaded herself, but she needed someone to drive it down south. During a Google search, she came across a man named Rubin. She gave him $600 of a $1,000 payment and off he went. Once Rubin unloaded her belongings in Georgia, he was to come back for the remaining balance. But she felt something was off.

"I knew he didn't for sure put the stuff in the house. I ended up calling my landlord in Georgia and asked him to go into the house to see if my stuff was there. The landlord let me know there was nothing in there. He took pictures of an empty house," said Brittany.

She called police and lured Rubin back to her home and when he returned, the police were waiting.

"I let the police officers know how he stole the truck, he stole all my merchandise. By the time he was trying to move the truck in the driveway the police swarmed on him and he got out of the truck and they arrested him. They went to the back of the truck to see if the stuff was in there, but it was gone," said Brittany.

Rubin is in custody and Brittany believes her belongings are still out there. She said she just wants her things back and won't press charges if Rubin cooperates. As of Friday afternoon he wasn't cooperating with police.

Brittany was initially going to move to Georgia to get a fresh start for herself and her children, but because of this incident she can no longer do that. The good news, her former employers gave her her old job back and she's going to make a fresh start for herself, here in Michigan.
