2015 was a year marred in scandal for the Volkswagen Motor Group. After U.S. officials discovered the car maker had cheated emissions test, VW is hoping to rebuild trust it lost.

The final few months of 2015 for Volkswagen were all about cleaning up their image. That message continued the first day of NAIAS.

The VW group recently announced 2,000 new jobs and a $900 million investment in the Chattanooga Plant in Tennessee.

VW said their most important goal of 2016 is to win back the trust in the brand and said America is 'vital to the future'.

Company heads faced the music after admitting to installing devices to cheat emissions test. That was 2015. A new year means a new start, including 2 new elecric vehicles.

Part of the Volkswagen brand is Audi, which announced 1.8 million sales worldwide.

With 3 new plugin hybride planned for the next year, the car company is focusing on the next technology.

But the overarching them for VW was a five letter word: trust.
