Pedestrian hit and killed while standing in driveway

The Sanilac County Sheriff's Office is investigating a fatal pedestrian accident that occurred on January 3, 2015 around 4 p.m. on Maple Valley Road near Peck Road in Flynn Twp.

According to Deputies, a 9-1-1 call came into Central Dispatch advising of a minor injury accident that had occurred on Maple Valley Road near Peck Road. While Deputies were responding to that scene, Central Dispatch received a second 9-1-1 call advising that a pedestrian was struck by a second vehicle that lost control in the same location.

The initial investigation showed that a 2011 Chevrolet Malibu Driven by 16-year-old Allyssa Halbert of Brown City and passengers, 39-year-old April Halbert, 15-year-old Mariah Halbert, and 65 year-old Diane Halbert also all of Brown City, were traveling south on Maple Valley Road near Peck Road when Alyssa lost control on the slushy roadway and crossed over entering the east ditch. As the female occupants were waiting for Deputies to arrive, 48-year-old Stephany Salazar came out of her residence in the 5000 block of Maple Valley Road to check on the occupants involved in the accident.

A 2005 Chevrolet Aveo driven by 20-year-old James Webb of Brown City was traveling south on Maple Valley Road near the accident scene when he lost control of his vehicle and crossed over the center line striking Salazar and April Halbert who were standing in a driveway at that location.

After striking Mrs. Salazar she was thrown several hundred feet and landed on a rock. Marlette EMS transported Salazar to Marlette Regional Hospital where she was later transported to Hurley Medical Center in Flint where she passed away from her injuries.

Halbert and her passengers were transported by personal vehicle to Marlette Regional Hospital for minor injuries.

The Sanilac County Sheriff's Office was assisted on scene by the Brown City Fire Department, Peck Police Department, and Marlette EMS.

The accident remains under investigation by the Sanilac County Sheriff's Office.
