The emergency vehicle everyone was looking for was Rescue 3, easy to identify because it has the big white number 3 on the side.
A Commerce firefighter parked Rescue 3 on the cement pad outside Station Two on Commerce Road. He left the diesel running and ran inside for a brief moment to pick up some medical supplies.
"The guy went to leave and the truck was gone," said Todd Martin, the Commerce Township fire marshal.
"The firefighter who discovered it missing, put it out on the air right away. Air 2 (sheriff helicopter) immediately responded," said Sgt. Lloyd Lacey of the Oakland County Sheriff's Office.
Ground units were mobilized to Huron Valley Sinai Grace Hospital where Rescue 3 was located - 1.7 miles away.
It was parked right outside the E.R. and beside the fire rig was a Community EMS ambulance. The suspect jumped into the back of the ambulance that had dropped off a patient.
He was arrested by police minutes later.
There was no visible damage to Rescue 3 and no one was hurt. Rescue 3 is used for very important runs like crash scenes and general emergencies.
The vehicle has air brakes and a push button transmission.
Investigators are looking into whether alcohol was a factor or if the suspect is battling mental issues. He is currently in custody.
"I don't recall every having a stolen rescue rig take place here or anywhere else," Lacey said. "It is a new one to me."
