Police searching for 14-year-old after shooting mom

A 14-year-old is being sought by state and local police after allegedly shooting his mother in the 15000 block of Wisconsin near Puritan on Detroit's west side.

The shooting stemmed from an argument at the family's home at about 8:30 p.m. when the teen's mom was wounded twice. She is in serious condition at a nearby hospital.

Detroit and Michigan State Police were looking for the teen who is still believed to be armed. 

"On arrival (our officers) found the woman, 40 years old, to be shot," said. Capt. Darin Szilagy. "Officers met with some family and found out that the offender, a 14-year-old shot his mother and then fled.

"He is armed with a handgun at this time. We have alot of resources out here looking for this young man."

Michigan State Police have a canine unit and helicopter assisting DPD in the manhunt.

The teen is described as black with a thin build, wearing red and black basketball shorts and a sweatshirt with purple sleeves.

Szilagy said that police believe the suspect is still in the area.
