Police say the victim, Toney McClinton of Shelby Township died at a local hospital. The second driver, a 21-year-old man, is seriously hurt and could face charges.
Within seconds Adam Rhodes says he was trying to help anyone he could from a two-car accident early Sunday morning.
"I heard a big crash out in front so I ran to the door," Adam Rhodes said. "I ran to the back side door, pried the back door open. He was in the car, in really bad shape screaming for his life."
The 21-year-old man who Rhodes was helping, was driving a mangled Mercury Mariner sport utility vehicle. Police say just before 4 a.m. Sunday, it hit the McClinton's Chrysler 300, crushing the car after a head-on collision.
"It appears the suspect's vehicle crossed center line and struck the other gentleman who we believed was on his way to work," said Capt. Stephen Stanbury of the Shelby Township Police Department.
His sister posted a message on her Facebook page, "Facebook family I need prayer for my family. My oldest brother was killed in a car accident this morning. Help me in Jesus' name from the south to the north."
The suspect was also transported to a local hospital where he is still recovering from his injuries. As the investigation continues, police want to confirm what may have caused the accident.
"(The) initial investigation indicates alcohol could be factor, although I can't confirm it at this time," said Stanbury. "We are waiting for test results to come back."
The suspect won't be identified until he is arraigned. But sources tell Fox 2 he recently served as a volunteer firefighter at the Troy Fire Department but left on his own to pursue other opportunities.
Police want any witnesses who saw the accident to come forward and contact Shelby Township police at (586) 731-2121.
