Suspicious package declared safe outside Detroit auto show

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms cleared the scene where a suspicious package had been found near Cobo Center.

The package, which was across the street from Cobo Center at the Crowne Plaza Downtown Detroit Convention Center, was X-rayed and checked by investigators who determined it was not a threat at about 8:40 p.m. Monday.

Shortly before 7 p.m. police blocked off a portion of Larned and Washington streets as a result of the package.

Investigators took the package seriously because it was addressed to someone not staying at the Crowne Plaza, Detroit police said.

Those attending the North American International Auto Show inside Cobo Center were not being allowed to leave the front entrance.

Press, auto industry members and others were being allowed to leave the building using alternate routes.
