TBT: Greektown before the casino

Before Greektown Casino became an anchor in Greektown, there was Trapper's Alley. But even before that, bars and restaurants dominated the area.

The year was 1975. The big three were rolling muscle cars off the line and Michiganders, in turn, were buying them and parking them here. Greektown was a hopping place!

This week's Throwback Thursday is a black and white shot on Monroe Street looking north from Beaubien Street. You can see Athens Bar, the Golden Fleece Restaurant, Olympia Shish Kebab and Athens Printing.

The intersection is still home to many restaurants and businesses but only one remains in the same place: Golden Fleece Restaurant. Judging by the images on Google, the restaurants sign remains unchanged, 40 years later.

FOX 2 wants to thank the Detroit Historical Society for this and all of our TBT photos.
