Tech Talk: Tracking snow plows to find the safest driving route

Three friends from Grand Rapids want to introduce to the entire state of Michigan to a program that tracks snow plows, helping drivers find the safest route when they have to drive during or after a snowstorm.

The group won a grand prize for their concept, called Sno-Fi, in a statewide software contest. Now, the technology is available in Wayne County on a program called Compass, but the group still has some hurdles to make the program available everywhere.

They're still working to get other city, county, state and private plows to share their snow plow information.

In the meantime, you can check out how it's working in Wayne County.

The dynamic, interactive site can be used on a computer or smart phone web browser. You can follow the trucks, check traffic flow and even watch the live dashboard cam on some trucks as they're plowing.

The program has been around for awhile and gets upgrades every year.
